This year, advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit (CTC) are sent monthly from July through December to eligible taxpayers. However, to receive the payments, families must file a 2020 tax return.

The IRS will host AdvCTC Free Tax Prep Days, CTC outreach events in select cities across the country. IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC) and key community stakeholders and volunteers will help eligible families prepare and file tax returns on August 20-21 and September 10-11. See the cities listed below. More information on dates, times and locations will be provided soon.
To make the sign-up process go quickly and smoothly, please bring the following information when you come to one of these events:
Social Security numbers for your children,
Social Security numbers or Tax Identification Numbers for yourself and your spouse,
a reliable mailing address,
an email address, and
your bank account information if you want to receive your payments by direct deposit.
Note: This service is on a walk-in basis and will be the only service provided during an event. Visitors should wear masks, follow social distancing protocols and limit the number of people that come with them.
