June 29, 2021
The Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department released information about how many people in each state received the third round of Economic Impact Payments through early June. The details are available on the SOI Tax Stats - Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) Statistics page in Excel format, classified by Adjusted Gross Income, State, and Martial Status through June 3.
The statistics provide details on more than 163 million payments worth approximately $390 billion.
About 90 million out of the 163 million payments sent through June 3 went to households with an adjusted gross income of under $50,000. The data also shows that 26 million payments went to households that didn’t file tax returns.
Reminder for People Who Don't Normally File a Tax Return
Although payments are automatic for most people, people who don't normally file a tax return and haven't received Economic Impact Payments should file a 2020 tax return to get all the benefits they're entitled to, including tax credits such as the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Filing a 2020 tax return also helps the IRS to determine eligibility for an advance payment of the 2021 Child Tax Credit, which will begin to be disbursed this summer.
Some federal benefits recipients may need to a file a 2020 tax return even if they don't usually file to give the IRS information needed to send payments for a qualifying dependent. Those people should file a 2020 tax return as soon as possible to be considered for an additional payment.
People who don't normally have an obligation to file a tax return and don't receive federal benefits may qualify for the Economic Impact Payments, including those experiencing homelessness and others. People who didn't get a first or second round Economic Impact Payment, or got less than the full amounts, may be eligible for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, but they'll need to file a 2020 tax return first. Refer to the Claiming the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit if you aren't required to file a tax return section on the IRS website.
Free tax return preparation is available for those who qualify.
Payment Eligibility
Some people won't be eligible for the third payment even if they received a first or second Economic Impact Payment or claimed a 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit because the income levels in the third round of Economic Income Payments has changed. Payments start to be reduced for people with Adjusted Gross Income of $75,000 or more ($150,000 for married filing jointly). The payments end at $80,000 for individuals ($160,000 for married filing jointly). People with Adjusted Gross Incomes above those levels are ineligible for a payment.
Payment Status
The IRS continues to distribute Economic Impact Payments and the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit on a weekly basis as people continue to file income tax returns and those returns are processed. Payments will be sent to eligible individuals the IRS did not previously have information for but who recently filed a tax return, as well to those who qualify for "plus-up" payments.
