Initial unemployment claims was 293,000 for the week ending October 9, which was a decrease of 36,000 from the prior week, and the lowest for initial claims since 256,000 on March 14, 2020.
194,000 jobs were added in September, the lowest growth this year, and the unemployment rate fell from 5.2% to 4.8%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, retail trade, and transportation and warehousing saw job gains, while public education employment declined in September.
4.3 million workers quit their jobs in August, the highest on record since December 2000.
