Here are some of the tools and resources offered by the IRS:
Free File offers free access to nine brand-name tax software products to those making $72,000 or less.
You may want to consider using Free File if you didn't get the full first and second Economic Impact Payments and may be eligible to claim the 2020 recovery rebate credit when you file. It's also a good way to get tax benefits such as the earned income tax credit and the additional child tax credit.
If you earned more than $72,000, you can use Free File Fillable Forms online, which is the electronic version of IRS paper forms.
If you are a member of the military, MilTax is a free online tax preparation service available for free through the Department of Defense.
Deadlines
If you requested an extension you can file whenever you're ready. You must file before the deadline of October 15, 2021 to avoid penalties and interest that may apply.
In some cases, if you're filing after the deadline, you may qualify for penalty relief.
Special deadline exceptions may apply for some disaster victims, certain military service members and eligible support personnel in combat zones.
The IRS has various ways for you to pay your taxes listed on their Paying Your Taxes Page here.
The Interactive Tax Assistant is an online IRS tool that helps you find answers to tax law questions.
Where's My Refund? Tool
After you file, you can check the status of your refund within 24 hours after the IRS has received your e-filed return. Once the IRS approves a refund, the tool will give you a date by which you can expect it. Where's My Refund? is updated once a day, typically overnight, so there's no need to check the status more often.
IRS agency employees can only research the status of a refund 21 days after a tax return is filed electronically, or if the Where's My Refund tool directs you to call the IRS.
It's currently taking the IRS longer to process mailed documents including paper tax returns and tax return related correspondence. It is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue refunds for some 2020 tax returns that require review; such as incorrect recovery rebate credit amounts, or returns that used 2019 income to figure the earned income tax credit and additional child tax credit
