Although October 15 is the filing deadline for most people who requested an extension of time to file their 2020 tax return, some people may have more time, including:
Members of the military and others serving in a combat zone typically have 180 days after they leave the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due.
Those in federally declared disaster areas who already had valid extensions have the following extended deadlines to file returns. Since tax payments related to these 2020 returns were due on May 17, 2021, they are not eligible for this relief.
California Wildfire Victims: Lassen, Nevada, Placer, Plumas Tehama and Trinity counties have until November 15, 2021 to file.
Louisiana Victims of Hurricane Ida: The entire state has until January 3, 2022 to file.
Michigan Victims of Severe Storms, Flooding, and Tornadoes: Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties have until November 1, 2021 to file.
Mississippi Victims of Hurricane Ida: All 82 counties and the Mississippi Choctaw Indian Reservation have until November 1, 2021 to file.
New Jersey Victims of Hurricane Ida: Bergen, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union and Warren counties have until January 3, 2022 to file.
New York Victims of Hurricane Ida: Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties have until January 3, 2022 to file.
North Carolina Victims of Tropical Storm Fred: Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Madison, Mitchell, Transylvania, Watauga and Yancey counties have until December 15, 2021 to file.
Pennsylvania Victims of Hurricane Ida: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York counties have until January 3, 2022 to file.
Tennessee Victims of Severe Storms and Flooding: Dickson, Hickman, Houston, and Humphreys counties have until January 3, 2022 to file.
