Federal tax return preparers should renew their Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs) soon for 2022, as all current PTINs expire on December 31, 2021. This includes Enrolled Agents whether or not they prepare returns. Enrolled agents must renew their PTIN every year to maintain their active status. Attorneys and certified public accountants do not need a PTIN unless they prepare all or substantially all of a federal tax return or claim for refund for compensation.
Anyone who either prepares or assists with preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid PTIN from the IRS. The PTIN is used as the tax return preparer’s identification number and must be placed in the Paid Preparer section of a tax return that the tax preparer prepared for compensation. Failure to have a current PTIN could result in penalties, injunction, and disciplinary action by the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility.
"Taxpayers are relying on your expertise to help them meet their tax obligations and for some to complete their largest financial transaction for the year. Make sure you're ready by renewing your PTIN now," said Carol A. Campbell, director, Return Preparer Office.
The non-refundable fee to renew your PTIN for 2022 is $35.95. Tax preparers with valid 2021 PTINs can renew them online or mail in Form W-12 - IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) Application (see PDF instructions here). Renewing by mail can take four to six weeks.
