September 20 - Dept. of Justice News Release - The United States filed a complaint in U.S. District Court to bar Beaumont, Texas tax preparer Michelle Denise Johnston from owning or operating a tax return preparation business and preparing federal tax returns for allegedly charging unauthorized “fees,” including fabricated or improperly inflated claims on returns.

September 22: Final regulation TD 9954: Treatment of Distributions of Property From a Corporation to a Shareholder was published in the Federal Register updating regulations under section 301 to reflect statutory changes made by the Technical and Miscellaneous Revenue Act of 1988, which changes provide that the amount of a distribution of property made by a corporation to its shareholder is the fair market value of the distributed property affecting shareholders that receive a distribution of property from a corporation, effective September 22, 2021. September 23 - Dept. of Justice News Release - Maryland tax preparers Lenore Worthy and Veronica Fortune were sentenced to prison for conspiring to defraud the United States and preparing false tax returns. Worthy was sentenced to six months in prison, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $189,748 in restitution to the United States, and Fortune was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $86,590 in restitution.
